During Year 6’s Sport and Performing Arts session with Mrs. Kelly-Hosking and Mrs. Atkinson, we were very lucky to have Matthew’s Yaiya (grandmother in Greek), mother and older brother teach us the famous Greek dance the Zorba. This is a traditional dance the Greeks use to express happy emotions.
Although quite challenging in parts, Year 6 concentrated and listened carefully to the instruction and music to succeed in the end in learning the dance. We also practiced the Zeibekiko which has the famous words, “OPA” being chanted throughout. This was one of our favourite moments, chanting OPA to everyone. There is no specific meaning to this word, but it symbolises happiness, joy and celebration.
Overall, a massive thank you goes to our visitors for their efforts in sharing some cultural dances from Greece with us. We all had a wonderful time, even the teachers!
